NISMO Reinforced 6-Speed Transmission
Japanese engineering – Close ratio – Brand new – 4 & 6 cylinder L-series
The philosophy behind TS-001
At S30.world, every Takumi Series product begins with one simple question: Would we choose it for our own personal S30-ONE? If the answer is anything other than an unquestionable yes, it does not become part of the collection.
The genuine NISMO 32010-RRS50 Reinforced 6-Speed Transmission was the first product to meet that standard. Not simply because it is stronger than the original gearbox, nor because it carries the NISMO name, but because it delivers the precise balance of performance, refinement, durability and driving enjoyment we wanted for the S30-ONE.
Our ambition was never to turn a classic Z into a completely different kind of car. We wanted to preserve the character of the original Nissan S30 while improving the experience of driving it. During development, we evaluated numerous gearbox solutions. Some offered impressive strength but lacked the refinement we expected; others required extensive modifications to the vehicle. The NISMO six-speed stood apart. It felt like the transmission Nissan might have engineered for the S30 if the car were still being developed today.
Engineered and crafted in Japan
Choosing the right transmission was only the beginning. Making it fit the Nissan L-series properly deserved the same level of attention. Rather than cut and weld an existing bellhousing, we commissioned an entirely new design from our Japanese engineering partner, a specialist with decades of experience in prototype development and high-performance components for leading Japanese automotive manufacturers.
In Japanese culture, “Takumi” describes a master craftsman. That respect for specialist knowledge, precise manufacturing and careful attention to every detail defines this collaboration. The purpose-engineered bellhousing is designed to complement the quality of the NISMO transmission itself: from its dimensions and machining to its surfaces, tolerances and finished fit. The result is an OEM-standard conversion concept that feels entirely at home in a Nissan drivetrain.
The standard TS-001 C1 OHC Bellhousing Replacement Kit is intended for 4 & 6 cylinder L-series engines with the original-style single-overhead-cam (OHC) cylinder head. For the rare NISMO DOHC and Datsun Works DOHC L-series engines, we offer the dedicated TS-001-DOHC Bellhousing Replacement Kit.
Development and real-world testing take place in Japan using S30 and S31 vehicles. Each solution is then evaluated by the S30.world team before being approved for use in our S30-ONE program. The objective is straightforward: genuine improvements in performance, reliability and enjoyment, without unnecessary compromises.
The advantage of starting completely new
One of the greatest advantages of TS-001 is not captured by a gear-ratio chart: the complete NISMO 32010-RRS50 transmission is brand-new. It is not a rebuilt original gearbox, not a refurbished used transmission and not an old unit fitted with selected new parts. The gearbox itself is entirely new, including every bearing, synchronizer, shaft and gear.
Original Nissan four- and five-speed transmissions have now been in service for decades. Even a carefully rebuilt example begins with an ageing unit, and a rebuild does not necessarily replace every component or eliminate every consequence of its previous working life. With TS-001 there is no donor gearbox, no unknown service history and no accumulated wear. All of the internal components begin their working life together, as a new genuine NISMO assembly.
That distinction matters. Starting with a completely new transmission provides an exceptionally sound foundation for long-term reliability, smooth shifting, quiet operation and mechanical refinement. For S30.world, it is one of the defining reasons for choosing TS-001 rather than a conventional rebuild.
Developed to be driven
The NISMO reinforced six-speed retains the mechanical feel enthusiasts value in a traditional Nissan manual gearbox, while introducing the precision and robustness expected from a modern performance transmission. Its close-ratio gearing keeps the L-series responsive and enjoyable through the gears; an overdrive sixth gear supports more relaxed motorway driving.
We do not select Takumi Series parts only because they look impressive on a specification sheet. We drive them. Our S30-ONE development cars have covered thousands of kilometres on European roads, from daily traffic and mountain passes to sustained high-speed motorway journeys. Through that testing, the NISMO six-speed has proved to be one of the most rewarding upgrades to the entire drivetrain. It adds capability without losing the character of the car, feeling equally appropriate on a Sunday morning drive or a long journey across the Alps.
That combination is why the TS-001 transmission has become our standard choice for future S30-ONE builds.
Technical overview and vehicle applications
The TS-001 package is based on the genuine, brand-new NISMO 32010-RRS50 reinforced six-speed manual transmission, featuring close-ratio gearing and an overdrive sixth gear. Detailed gear ratios and comparisons with other transmissions can be found in the accompanying product gallery.
The conversion has been developed for all Nissan 4&6 cylinder L-series-powered vehicle.
The conversion has been developed with particular attention to original Nissan drivetrain architecture and long-term serviceability. The supplied mounting collars allow the original transmission mounting arrangement to be adapted on S30, S31 and S130/280ZX vehicles from approximately October 1971 through 1984. Earlier cars originally equipped with a three-piece transmission can use a separately fabricated solution or the dedicated optional billet-aluminium mounting bracket described below. Verify the original transmission configuration before selecting mounting hardware.
Choosing the final drive ratio
The differential ratio is just as important as the transmission itself. During S30-ONE development, we tested combinations of engine specifications, tyre diameters and final drive ratios to find the balance between acceleration and relaxed high-speed touring. There is no single correct choice: the best ratio depends on the engine, tyres, intended use and, ultimately, the driver’s personal preference.
| Final drive | Driving character |
| 3.364:1 | Lowest cruising engine speed; exceptionally relaxed long-distance touring, but less lively in spirited driving. |
| 3.545:1 | A comfortable all-round touring ratio once underway, with more emphasis on refinement than acceleration. |
| 3.700:1 | A noticeably quicker response while remaining very suitable for longer journeys. |
| 3.900:1 | A sportier feel for fast road use, especially enjoyable on steep and winding mountain roads. |
| 4.111:1 | Strongest emphasis on acceleration and responsiveness for competition-inspired applications. |
What is included in the TS-001 package
Every standard TS-001 package for an OHC Nissan L-series installation includes the following components:
| Reference | Part number | Component |
| TS-001 A | 32010-RRS50 | Genuine NISMO reinforced 6-speed transmission — completely brand-new |
| TS-001 B | 32839-89F00 | Genuine Nissan shift lever |
| TS-001 C1 | GIKENCC-OHC | OHC bellhousing replacement kit for the NISMO six-speed |
| Included | — | Mounting collars to adapt the OEM transmission mount (S30 / S31 / S130-280ZX, approximately 10/1971–1984) |
For an L-series engine equipped with a NISMO DOHC or Datsun Works DOHC cylinder head, please enquire about the dedicated TS-001 C2 GIKENCC-DOHC bellhousing replacement kit instead of the standard OHC version.
Optional transmission mounting brackets
The package includes mounting collars for adapting the original transmission mount on S30, S31 and S130/280ZX applications from approximately October 1971 through 1984.
For early S30 vehicles with an original three-piece transmission, a custom solution can also be fabricated. For customers who prefer a purpose-made solution, S30.world offers two optional billet-aluminium transmission mounts.
| Reference | Part number | Application |
| TS-001 D | — | Early S30, 10/1969–09/1971; cars originally using the three-piece F4W71A four-speed or FS5C71A five-speed. Billet-aluminium mount. |
| TS-001 E | — | S30 / S31 / S130-280ZX, approximately 10/1971–1984; cars with F4W71B or FS5C71B transmissions onward, through the end of S130/280ZX production. Billet-aluminium mount. |
Choose the bracket by identifying the original transmission and mounting arrangement rather than relying on the vehicle registration year alone. The change from the early three-piece 4-speed A-type transmission to a 4 speed two piece B-type gearboxes took place around October 1971 although the FS5C71A remained available several months longer before it was replaced by the FS5C71B.
Package pricing
The following regional prices apply to the standard TS-001 package. Optional transmission mounting brackets are charged separately.
- Europe: €4,995 including tax.
- United States (imported): US$4,720 excluding tax.
- Rest of world (shipped from the Japan warehouse, excluding the regions above): US$4,720 excluding tax.
Additional components and installation considerations
A complete installation also requires a custom driveshaft with the appropriate transmission yoke and correct length, plus bellhousing gaskets to be fabricated by the installer. Driveshaft length should be established from measurements taken on the vehicle after installation. For early three-piece-transmission vehicles, an appropriate mounting solution is also necessary if the optional TS-001 D bracket is not selected.
About the S30.world Takumi Series
The Takumi Series is a carefully selected collection of components developed in collaboration with Japanese engineers, craftsmen and specialist manufacturers. Rather than trying to manufacture every product ourselves, we look for areas in which the S30 community deserves a better solution. We bring together the right expertise, initiate new development where needed and work closely with our partners until the result meets the standard we would demand for our own cars.
Some Takumi Series products are entirely new developments; others are carefully refined solutions. All must demonstrate sound engineering, manufacturing quality and real-world durability before earning a Takumi Series reference number. TS-001 is the first expression of that philosophy, and the beginning of a collection dedicated to authentic Japanese craftsmanship and continual improvement.
